Answer: If you are like most new caregivers you have probably found yourself in this role suddenly as the result of a crisis that has taken place with a parent or sibling. Caring from across the miles often complicates an already emotionally tenuous situation, but assistance, support and direction is available. Check with your Human Resources Department at work. Many companies offer Employee Assistance Programs or Work/Life Programs to help employees balance work and life issues. Elder care referral services may be offered as a benefit.

Geriatric case managers are also a helpful option. These social workers or nurses specialize in assessing the needs of elderly people and matching them with services available.
