Breast Cancer Awareness

Wear your pink ribbon proudly this month because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s important to be aware all year long, but October is a good time for all of us to heighten our awareness of issues related to breast cancer, especially the importance of screening and early detection.

Please reserve some time to make sure that you’re taking advantage of the breast cancer screening tests that are appropriate for your age and situation. Here are some basic guidelines for early detection of breast cancer:

Walk Score Image
Walk This Way!

Between the gorgeous autumn weather and the high prices of gas, it seems like a great time to choose walking over driving. Plus, walking is healthier for us and for our environment. But just how “walkable” is your neighborhood? Could you easily accomplish everyday errands by opting to walk rather than drive?

Get help deciding if you should abandon your car keys for your walking shoes by visiting www.walkscore.com. Walk Score is a web site that helps estimate your neighborhood’s “walkability.” Walkability is determined by measuring how close your home is to nearby amenities like restaurants, convenient stores, libraries, parks, coffee shops, movie theatres, shopping centers, and more.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary

The big election is coming soon! The outcome of the November 4 vote will have a significant impact on your life and mine. Respectfully, I strongly encourage you to vote. It’s a tremendous right of our country’s citizens.

Although I won’t endorse a candidate, I will ask that you look closely at Question 1 on the Massachusetts state ballot. Question 1 will ask voters if you want to repeal the state income tax.

Hard To Heat Our Homes

Question: I am 86 and live in my own home that is heated with natural gas. Last year, the heating costs were very high. I can’t imagine what they’ll be this year! I’m afraid I won’t be able to pay my bill and I’ll have my heat shut off. Is there help available?

Answer: Yes, there is. At current energy prices, it’s going to be a hard winter to heat homes. Thankfully, through the advocacy of many groups, legislators are beginning to understand the impact of soaring oil costs on elders. Individuals in both state and federal government are pushing to increase fuel assistance levels to help offset the high cost of energy used for heating.
