MVES | Beacon Bits

A Supplement to MVES's Newsletter

February 2009

In recognition of American Heart Month, this February issue of Mystic Valley Elder Services’s BeaconBits is all about the heart. Here are eight helpful resources:

  • Oatmeal is one of the best foods for your heart, according to Health.com. Other heart healthy foods include salmon, nuts, avocados, and spinach. More on heart healthy foods.

  • How much do you really know about your heart? Take a quiz.

  • People suffering from heart disease and their caregivers can connect with others to share information and experiences by joining an online community. Look for one that suits you best. See an example.

  • CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is an emergency procedure given to people suffering cardiac arrest. See CPR in three steps and watch a demonstration.

  • Would you realize if you or someone you loved was having a heart attack? Know the warning signs.

  • Exercise is good for you heart—it reduces the risk of heart disease and improves blood circulation. Get exercise tips for older adults.

  • The higher your blood pressure, the higher the risk for heart attack. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 or lower. Learn how to lower your blood pressure.

  • Why not show you support for women’s heart disease awareness by wearing red on February 6. It’s National Wear Red Day! Read more.
