MVES' 2009 Senior Fine Art
Show
Calling all senior artists and photographers! MVES is pleased to invite local senior artists to participate in its
eighth Senior Fine Art Show. The show offers an opportunity for seniors to share their artwork and photography with fellow artists and the
community.
Amateur and professional artists over the age of 60 from Everett, Malden, Medford, Melrose, North Reading, Reading,
Stoneham, and Wakefield are invited to submit a maximum of two pieces of artwork—sketches; photos; or paintings in oil, acrylic, pastel, or
watercolor—to be showcased in the art show. Art must be delivered and picked up by the artists or family members, and must be framed and wired
so it’s ready to hang.

Program Profile: The Home-Delivered Meals Program
In honor of National Nutrition Month, we’re featuring our nutrition department’s home-delivered meals
program as March’s Program Profile. The Program Profile is a new and reoccurring Beacon column that provides our readers with a basic
description of an MVES program or service.
The MVES home-delivered meals program—also known as Meals-on-Wheels—brings meals to elders who cannot
shop or cook for themselves and who aren’t well enough to go to a senior dining site. Elders who receive home-delivered meals may be unable to
cook due to a physical ailment, may not have the financial resources to pay for food, or are homebound and unable to shop for their own
groceries.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary
So much of what we hear lately involves talk of stimulus plans and bailouts. Elders may understandably wonder,
“Where’s our bailout?” Although I can’t sign a special elder stimulus package into law, I can detail how existing
programs—and the federal stimulus package—can help seniors during these challenging times.

Nursing Home
Ratings
Question: My mother lives alone and is
becoming increasingly frail. She has difficulty cooking meals and sometimes needs help with common tasks like bathing. I’ve been considering
nursing homes and I thought I read that the government is now rating nursing homes. Do you have any information about this?
Answer: Yes, the federal government has an
updated web site that rates 16,000 nursing homes much like hotel ratings—with five stars being the best. The updated web site is sponsored by
the federal Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and it’s designed to give consumers more information with which to make a decision about
nursing home care. Only nursing homes that participate in Medicare and Medicaid are included in the rankings, however, most nursing homes do
participate in these programs.
