Beat the Heat!
Summer 2010 has most certainly been a scorcher! As temperatures soar, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on the older adults in our lives. Elders are much more likely to develop heat-related illnesses than younger folks because as we age our bodies don’t adjust as well to drastic changes of temperature. Also, some medications that elders are more likely to take can affect the way their bodies regulate heat.
Here are some tips and resources to help us beat the heat!
- Prevention of heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, is critical to protecting your overall health. Read tips from the Administration on Aging on safeguarding your health during the hot weather
here.
- Air-conditioning can provide a lot of relief in a summer like this one. On the most unbearably hot days when it’s too hot for fans to be effective, air-conditioners can even help you stay safe. Get information from AARP about finding the right air-conditioner for you
here.
- Illnesses that are brought on by extreme heat can spark a lot of questions. Who is most at risk? How can I prevent getting sick? Check out this list of frequently asked questions about extreme heat provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
here.
- What’s the difference between a heat watch, heat warning, and heat advisory? Find the answers to these questions and ensure that you’re prepared during a heat wave by downloading the Red Cross’s Heat Wave Safety Checklist
here.
- The heat affects more than just people! Our pets also can be in danger when the temperatures reach extreme highs. Find out more from the Human Society about how to keep your animals safe and healthy in this heat
here.
- Unfortunately, there’s a relatively lengthy list of illnesses that heat can cause in older adults. Learn the symptoms and what to do if the heat is affecting your health. Download the National Institute on Health’s Age Page: Hyperthermia: Too Hot for Your Health brochure
here.
In extreme heat, it’s important that we watch out for each other and stay informed about how to remain healthy when the thermometer climbs. Stay cool! For more information, contact Mystic Valley Elder Services at 781-324-7705.
