Come To MVES' Fifth Annual Theatre Event, My Fair Lady

“Wouldn’t it be loverly” to enjoy a night out while supporting local elders? Join MVES for its annual theatre event, My Fair Lady, on April 10, 2010 at 8 p.m. at the Stoneham Theatre.

My Fair Lady is MVES’ fifth annual theatre event to benefit the MVES Gap Fund, an endowment created by MVES that hopes to raise $1 million. The interest accrued by the Gap Fund is used to provide home care services to elders who are slightly above government income eligibility guidelines or who are not considered frail enough for government-supported services.

MVES Encourages You To Embrace Your Future

Massachusetts recently launched an initiative called “Embrace Your Future” that encourages residents to take a proactive approach to planning for the future.

Governor Patrick mailed a letter and an “Embrace Your Future” brochure to all Massachusetts residents between the ages of 45 and 65. The letter and brochure encourage this age group, often referred to as baby boomers, to think carefully about their future and to plan for their long-term support needs.

“MVES supports the state’s emphasis on the importance of planning ahead,” said MVES Executive Director Dan O’Leary. “MVES serves as a resource for individuals who are planning for themselves, as well as for people who are caring for elder relatives or friends.”

Soup for Meals on Wheels image
Soup's On For Meals On Wheels!

On a freezing cold winter day, nothing satisfies quite like a cup of hot soup! Beginning in March, MVES’ home-delivered meals program will offer soup twice a week.

There will be a wide variety of soups on the menu. March’s includes corn, clam, potato, and seafood chowders and tomato, mushroom, and vegetable barley soups! Home-delivered meals clients are encouraged to check the menu each month to see when the soup will be served. To view March’s menu, click here (opens PDF in new window).

It only happens once every 10 years. It involves 10 questions and 10 minutes of your time. It’s the national census and it’s important that you respond!

Caregiver Concerns

Question: My mother is in her late 70s and has been in good health. She lives in her own home and is quite independent. However, she recently fell and fractured her hip. She was in a short-term rehabilitation facility for several weeks and then received care in her home from the visiting nurses. Her hip is coming along well, but she still needs help bathing and I suddenly find myself in the role of her caregiver. I’m new to this dynamic, but I would guess there are many people in a similar role?

Answer: Yes, you are one of many caregivers across the country! Family caregivers, sometimes referred to as informal caregivers, provide tremendous amounts of support to related individuals. Without caregivers like you, many elders and adults with disabilities would not be able to live independently.
