As a federally-designated Area Agency on Aging (AAA), MVES has the opportunity to provide information, transportation, and nutrition programs to area elders. We also have the privilege, under the Older Americans Act, to help reach elders who may not be able to readily access mainstream supports. To assist in this effort, MVES annually awards Title III grants to local agencies that help broaden our reach. I am proud to announce the Federal Fiscal Year 2010 grant recipients.
The Arc of East Middlesex (EMARC)
EMARC will provide assistance to individuals who have developmental disabilities and help to these individuals’ caregivers. EMARC will offer its Adult Advocacy Program, which provides support to elders who are caring for adult children or grandchildren who have disabilities.
The Community Family (TCF)
TCF will offer weekend, adult day care for individuals with dementia. This service offers a respite to caregivers.
Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center (GBCGAC)
GBCGAC will help MVES provide information to the large population of Chinese-speaking elders in Malden and surrounding areas. A bilingual case manager will meet with Chinese elders at the Malden Council on Aging twice every week. Conversational English classes will also be offered.
Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS)
GBLS will provide legal assistance to elders who are low-income, socially isolated, members of minority groups, as well as individuals with disabilities. This legal advice will be offered at no-cost to elders who have immediate legal needs in areas such as housing, Social Security, and credit debt.
Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice (HHVNA and Hospice)
HHVNA and Hospice will offer a caregiver support group twice monthly. The primary audience will be adult caregivers, the “sandwich” generation, who care for their parents and their own children.
The Immigrant Learning Center (ILC)
The ILC, located in Malden, will help empower area elders by teaching them English for Speakers of Other Languages. The ILC will offer three program sessions that each run 15 weeks. The ILC strives to teach English so that students can live in the US as successful workers, parents, and community members.
MAB Community Services (MAB)
MAB helps elders who are visually impaired but who are not legally blind. MAB will offer in-home assessments to help identify obstacles that might jeopardize the safety of a person with a visual impairment. MAB will also offer adaptive equipment to those dealing with visual impairment.
MVES is proud to work with these organizations in the upcoming year. If you’d like to learn more about any of these organizations or the Title III grants, please contact us.
