An air of excitement filled the Stoneham Theatre on April 10, the evening of MVES’ annual theatre benefit. Event sponsors, theatre goers, and friends of MVES were thrilled to enjoy the sights, sounds, and songs of the popular musical My Fair Lady while supporting local elders.

The excitement didn’t cease when the actors and guests had cleared the theatre, but only heighten as the evening’s proceeds were tallied. The final numbers are in and MVES’ fifth annual theatre event netted $78,672 for the MVES Gap Fund!

“This year’s event raised $15,000 more for the Gap Fund than last year’s, and we can’t thank our sponsors enough!” said Jim Oosterman, co-chair of the MVES Development Committee. “This ongoing support of the Gap Fund allows MVES to deliver direct services to elders who fall in service eligibility gaps. The Gap Fund is keeping elders independent in the community.”

The Gap Fund is an endowment created by MVES that hopes to raise $1 million. The interest accrued by the endowment is used to provide home care services to elders who are slightly above government income eligibility guidelines or who are not considered frail enough for government-supported services.

My Fair Lady’s proceeds have put the Gap Fund more than half-way to its fundraising goal, having reached the $515,000 mark. As the endowment grows, so too does the group of elders who’ve benefited. The Gap Fund has provided services to over 100 area elders. Click here to read one elder’s story (opens new window).

Next year’s theatre event is already in the works, so mark your calendars! MVES will partner with the Stoneham Theatre on May 21, 2011 to present 42nd Street to benefit the Gap Fund. For more information, please contact MVES’ Development Office at 781-324-7705.
