For Your Reading Pleasure...

Have you ever sat with a friend and discussed what your perfect day would be like? Have you ever talked with a family member about youth, marriage, or aging? If you’ve ever wondered about these issues, you might enjoy our staff recommended book Tuesdays with Morrie. The book takes an interesting look at one man’s views on the different emotions and stages that make up our lives.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a true story, written by Mitch Albom, that brings to life the final days of Mitch’s most influential college professor, Morrie Schwartz. Tied up with life’s complexities, Mitch loses touch with his mentor shortly after graduation. Years later, Mitch discovers that Morrie is suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gherig’s disease. Saddened by the news, Mitch looks to reunite with Morrie and catch up on lost time.

One visit with Morrie soon has Mitch visiting his old professor each Tuesday thereafter, discussing and pondering important life issues such as culture, marriage, family, aging, and death. The weekly visits become Mitch’s final "classes” with his former professor as Morrie offers Mitch his lessons on life. As Morrie’s health deteriorates, his bond with his former student grows stronger. Through their final conversations together, Morrie encourages Mitch to value his life. Morrie explains, “You have to find what’s good and true and beautiful in your life as it is now. Looking back makes you competitive. And age is not a competitive issue.”

Tuesdays with Morrie is an excellent read that should prove inspiring to both youth and older adults alike. It is not just a story about a man who is suffering from ALS. The book represents a bridge between generations. We follow the true story of a younger man looking to an elder for advice and guidance. As each Tuesday passes, Mitch better understands Morrie, realizing that Morrie has lived the life that Mitch is only just beginning.

Most importantly, there is an underlying feeling that Morrie isn’t just speaking to Mitch, but that he’s speaking to all of us. Through his own anecdotes and experiences, he encourages everyone to find meaning in their life and to live life to its fullest.

With over five million copies sold, it's no wonder Tuesdays with Morrie is so popular. If you’d like to read a moving, thought-provoking story, we recommend that you pick up a copy!
