A Partnership of the Wakefield Housing Authority and Mystic Valley Elder Services, Inc.
This state-of-the-art supportive living project is designed to offer low- to moderate-income elders first class independent living in 22 one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom unit. There are handicapped accessible units and the building has an elevator for second and third floor access. The new residence will be the focal point for services throughout the Hart's Hill campus, bringing an enhanced level of security and independence to all residents.
The $4.1 million construction portion of the project was financed with $3.1 million of federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds under the 202 program and approximately $1 million of state money (HOME and HIF funds) via the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Section 8 rental certificates will provide ongoing operating support. The project is a partnership between Mystic Valley Elder Services, Inc. (MVES) and the Wakefield Housing Authority (WHA). The two organizations have created a separate not-for-profit, IRS-approved, tax-exempt corporation to build and manage the project, the Wakefield Senior Housing Corporation (WSHC). Essential private support provided funding for furnishings and amenities throughout the common areas of the residence.
The new building has three levels with the back set into a slope
with two levels above ground. The exterior is clapboard with bay windows in every unit. The first floor includes office space for staff and service providers, a dining/community room that will seat 50, an activities and crafts room, laundry, and work/storage space. The
second and third floors house the residents' units. Each floor has a lounge as well as a multipurpose room that will be utilized as an exercise/therapy room and library.
We envision that the entire Hart's Hill neighborhood will become a campus-style living environment with the focal point being the new supportive living residence. Area seniors will be invited to the first floor dining/community room that will be used for daily luncheons and for social and educational activities. MVES and other agencies will provide onsite personal care and other health and supportive services to residents of the new building as well as to residents of
surrounding apartments. The Wakefield Housing Authority will maintain the interior and exterior of the building. MVES and the WHA will provide services under contract to the WSHC.
We would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the project. A special thank you goes to all those who have supported this endeavor over the past six years!
