Prescription Advantage, the state’s prescription drug insurance
program, will only have open enrollment for several more days—until
August 30. Elders are encouraged to immediately review their insurance
needs and, if appropriate, apply for the program.
Prescription Advantage members may pay a deductible and then modest
co-payments for prescriptions. Once the deductible and co-payments
reach a predefined level, a member doesn't pay any additional co-payments
for the rest of year.
In related news, BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts has recently
indicated its intentions to raise rates for its Medigap insurance plans,
which include Medex Gold, Medex Bronze, and Medex Core. Only Medex
Gold covers all prescriptions and the proposed increases will affect
this plan the most.
“With the limited enrollment time for Prescription Advantage
and the proposed increases in Medigap coverage, elders are urged to
carefully look at their prescription needs immediately,” said
MVES Executive Director Daniel J. O’Leary. “If Prescription
Advantage meets these needs, elders should send in their applications
today.”
Elders and other eligible parties are encouraged to contact MVES,
local councils on aging, or download an application directly from www.800ageinfo.com. Applications
must be received by September 2, 2003.
