Are you a caregiver? Could you use some help? "The Giving Care, Taking Care: A Caregiver Conference Series" is an MVES-sponsored series of informative talks designed to help caregivers more easily deal with their caregiving responsibilities. The series is organized by Kathy Learned, MVES' caregiver support coordinator, and its goal is to help caregivers identify important resources and supports.

The featured speaker for each topic is Samir Patel, M.D. Dr. Patel is a geriatric psychiatrist and is the associate medical director of the Inpatient Medical Psychiatric Program of Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford/Hallmark Health. All conference sessions are free and will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at Lawrence Memorial Hospital/School of Nursing, Classroom A.

Ringing in the Chinese New Year
    .
Over 100 elders from Malden and surrounding communities welcomed the Chinese New Year by celebrating at the Peking Gourmet restaurant on Main Street in Malden. The Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center (GBCGAC), supported by MVES and the Malden Council on Aging, hosted the event that included a delicious buffet, raffle prizes, and entertainment.

"The New Year's celebration allows Chinese elders to celebrate their cultural traditions," said Mary Kinsell, MVES director of planning and community services. "It's an enjoyable day for all involved."

Turn Unwanted Items into Cash Contributions
    .
Do you have an attic filled with clutter? Items you no longer want may be treasures to someone else. Now you can convert those unwanted items into cash contributions for MVES by visiting www.missionfish.org.

MissionFish and eBay, the world's largest online marketplace, recently combined forces to make this form of charitable giving possible. Here's how it works. You browse to www.missionfish.org, register to sell an item, select MVES as the nonprofit you want to support, and select a percentage of the final value of the sale to donate to MVES (ten percent to one hundred percent). As a registered charity, MVES can welcome your potential donation or suggest that you give your generosity to another charity.

Advantages of the new Medicare Drug Discount Cards

Q: When are the new Medicare drug discount cards coming out? What will they do?

A: The federal Department of Health and Human Services has indicated that new prescription discount cards will be out this spring. Romney's Commitment to Elders Essential
As an advocate for community-based services for the elderly, I applauded Governor Mitt Romney's comments regarding the elderly in his State of the State speech. The Governor's statement that not taking care of elders at home is "one of the greatest travesties in our state" was accurate. The remark hit the bull's-eye.

At MVES, we believe seniors want to be cared for at home, and the U.S. Supreme Court has gone even further by saying that disabled people of all ages have the right to be cared for in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs. It is encouraging that the Governor seems to be in agreement with federal opinion.

We still need to remember, however, that state funds for the largest home care program in the state have been frozen for three years running. Moving seniors into home care settings and out of institutions is good for elders and saves money for taxpayers. It's a win-win situation.
