Marjorie McDermott

Educated And Dedicated, An MVES Volunteer

“I speak German, French, Italian, Russian, and English of course,” Marjorie McDermott, 59, said in a modest, soft voice while circling her electric wheelchair around the common room of her assisted living residence. As an opera singer it’s important to be fluent in, or at least familiar with, many languages she explained. “I didn’t have that shimmering, break the windows voice, but I’m still working on it,” said McDermott with a smile.

It’s not everyday you meet an opera singer or someone with a past like McDermott’s. She studied anthropology at the University of New York, psychology in Geneva, Switzerland with child psychologist Jean Piaget, and opera at the New England Conservatory of Music. She has her master’s degree in education from the University of Lowell, and she taught in Lowell public schools and at Lesley College. Certainly an impressive list of life accomplishments, but it’s not just her past that’s remarkableit’s her present, too.

Elder on Laptop
Too Old For New Media?

If your daughter told you to check out her MySpace page, would you know where to go? How about if your grandson said he’d be on Facebook all day? Would you nod in understanding or shrug in confusion? How about if a friend told you she had a blog—would you ask her for the web address or inquire whether she’d seen a doctor? MVES wants to know what you know about social networking and new or digital media.

New media is about using technology to communicate with a wide number of individuals. Communication in new media is two-way. Company/consumer, teacher/student, politician/constituent. It’s a conversation.

Women Symbol with Heart

Heart Attack Symptoms in Women

Chest pain or discomfort has long been seen as the most common early warning sign of a heart attack. But recent research has raised questions about whether this holds true for women. A new study looked at the available evidence and concluded that chest pain is the most common sign of heart attack for most women.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among U.S. women. It affects 1 in 10 females over age 18. In light of the recent uncertainty about heart attack symptoms in women, NIH-funded researchers examined 69 studies published over 35 years. The studies ranged from large clinical trials to smaller studies and patient interviews.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary

What may be more complicated and confusing than filing your taxes with all the schedules, exemptions, forms, confusing terms, and instructions? The answer just might be finding the right health insurance plan(s)! And, like taxes, what is right this year may not be right next year. So maybe we should add health insurance to the phrase “you can’t avoid death, taxes, and the need for quality health insurance.”

Will I Get My 'Economic Stimulus' Rebate?

Question:
I’ve heard that the federal government will be issuing ‘economic stimulus’ rebates for some elders. I don’t file tax returns. Do I have to file a federal tax return to get my rebate?

Answer: The short answer is yes. Even if you normally don’t file a federal tax return, to receive your payment under the ‘economic stimulus package,’ you must file a return. An estimated 20 million seniors on Social Security are eligible to get $300 per individual or $600 per couple through the rebate. Payments will be sent starting in May—but only to people who file a 2007 federal tax return.
