Are you a caregiver? Could you use some help? Giving Care, Taking
Care: A Caregiver Conference Series is an MVES-sponsored series
of informative talks designed to help caregivers more easily deal with
their caregiving responsibilities. The series is organized by Kathy
Learned, MVES’ caregiver support coordinator, and its goal is
to help caregivers identify important resources and supports.
The featured speaker for each topic is Samir Patel, M.D. Dr. Patel
is a geriatric psychiatrist and is the associate medical director of
the Inpatient Medical Psychiatric Program of Lawrence Memorial Hospital
of Medford/Hallmark Health. All conference sessions are free and will
be held from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Lawrence Memorial Hospital/School
of Nursing, Classroom A.
The Series:
Medical Disease and Behavioral Changes (February 11, 2004)
Many medical diseases can cause behavioral changes. This lecture will
focus on behavioral manifestations that can be caused by various
medical diseases or the treatment of these diseases.
Health Insurance Maze for the Elderly: Medicare versus Medicare
HMOs (February 25, 2004)
This lecture will focus on the benefits and challenges of being enrolled
in Medicare or Medicare HMOs, with emphasis on the importance of understanding
that added benefits come at a price — including control and flexibility.
Second Opinion Consultations: Why, When, How (March 10, 2004)
Second opinion consultations are generally underutilized, particularly
in the elderly population in which the complexity of underlying medical
and psychiatric illnesses can present diagnostic and treatment challenges.
The effective use of second opinion consultations will be discussed.
End of Life and Quality of Life Issues (March 24, 2004)
Definition of these two very important concepts and healthcare will
be provided and the ethical, moral, legal, and medical issues related
to these concepts will be discussed.
