The Elder At Risk Program provides crisis-intervention,
short-term intensive casework, and advocacy for elders who are
not able to remain safely in the community without some specialized
intervention and assistance. The EAR worker uses patient, supportive
casework to build a trusting relationship with the elder. The
goal of the program is to alleviate immediate safety risks and
work with the elder to accept services through regular channels.
- Elders who are 60 years old and over, and live
in the eight-town Mystic Valley area of Massachusetts in the United
States.
- Elders who are at serious and imminent risk
in the community due to psychiatric issues, dementia and cognitive
deficits, mental status changes, substance abuse, or medical problems.
- Elders who seem unable or unwilling to meet
their basic needs for housing, nutrition, personal safety, personal
care, or medical care.
- Elders who are resistant to services,
have no advocates, or who continue to be unsafe in the community
despite the efforts of family and professionals to intervene.
