SHINE stands for Serving Health Information Needs
of Elders. This program helps elders and Medicare beneficiaries to understand
their Medicare benefits and other health insurance options. The SHINE
Program ensures that Medicare beneficiaries have access to accurate, up-to-date
information about their health care options.
Community volunteers who are trained and certified by the Massachusetts
Executive Office of Elder Affairs in many areas of health insurance,
including Medicare Parts A, B, and D; Medigap insurance; Medicare HMOs;
retiree insurance plans; long term care insurance; Medicaid; Medicare's
"Buy-In" programs (QMB and SLMB); and many free or reduced
cost health care programs.
SHINE Counselors can help elders and Medicare beneficiaries understand
their rights and benefits under Medicare and other health insurance coverage.
Counselors can review present coverage, provide written comparisons of
plans, protect elders from paying bills they should not pay, and prevent
paying for unnecessary duplicate coverage. Counselors also help with claim
forms and applications. They will make referrals when appropriate.
SHINE Counselors are located at senior centers, councils on aging, and
other locations throughout the community. Please contact the SHINE Program
Coordinator at Mystic Valley Elder Services by calling (781) 324-7705.
