In 2004, our board of directors issued a challenge to us and to themselves: to raise $1,000,000 for elders without resources. The money would be placed in a Gap Endowment Fund, ensuring that elders who fell in the gap – that is, elders who were ineligible for state assistance but unable to pay on their own – would have access to the little bit of help they need to stay in their own homes.
Eight and a half years later, we’ve met our initial goal! Our community has raised over $1,000,000 for the Gap Endowment Fund, and already the interest from this endowment is benefiting elders in our community. Every month, about 50 elders in need receive a little extra help with housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and personal care – thanks to the Gap Fund, and thanks to supporters like you.
But it’s a different world than it was in 2004. We’ve seen the economy rattle, interest rates drop, and formerly robust social services close their shutters for good. More people than ever need a little extra help to get by. So our board of directors is making a plan — a plan for the long-term sustainability of the Gap Endowment Fund, and for long-term peace of mind for the elders in our communities.
Whether our new goal is $2 million or even more, the one thing we know is that each dollar we raise helps elders in our communities access the basic, critical services that they need to live in their own homes and communities for as long as they desire. And our communities are better, richer places when everyone is able to participate.
Will you join our campaign to ensure that all elders have access to home care services regardless of income? You may donate directly to the Gap Fund, purchase tickets to our annual spring fundraiser, or sign up to sponsor the event. Every action you take makes a concrete difference in the life of your community.
And don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year’s event!
